Mircea Eliade, a Rumanian phenomenologist, researcher of history of religion, as well a philo-sopher of culture, did propagate an idea of a “new humanism”, a research attitude, which was supossed to start a new kind of study on history of religion, combining together elements of phenomenology and hermeneutics. Through a description and a understanding interpretation of religious phenomena we may, as Eliade thought, reach the significant dimension of experiencing the reality – to the experience of the sacrum. This experience is an experience par excellence, be-cause in it occurs the division between subject and object reality, so it is a primordial and source experience. The experience does not only change the knowledge of the subject, but also changes the subject itself – its way of being, character of bounds with the world, and the self-understanding is anthropomorphic. Eliade does express the assumption, that an authentic need of man, always alive and always present, is the need of relevance to transcendence; a need that says more about the man himself than the transcendence itself. A direct relation between the sacrum and profanum does make a dialectical bound between them, which is being expressed by religious symbolism. The description of their structure and functioning is in Eliade’s work an attempt of recognition of the character and the kind of experiencing the revealing sacrum. The dialectics of sacrum and profanum allows us to understand the peculiarity of the religious experience in relation to its other forms and the interpretation of symbols provides us with rules of understanding the manifesta-tions of sacrum, the glimpses of transcendence revealed by hierophanies.
